Your credits for editorship and contribution are in error
To cite Meriwether Lewis as Editor of this and other volumes of this University of Nebraska Press edition, edited by Moulton, is an injustice to Moulton. Lewis' efforts never got beyond a pros- pectus. Further, to list Clark as merely a con- tributor, is unforgiveable.

Land Value Taxation: Can It and Will It Work Today?
Published in Paperback by Lincoln Institute of Land Policy (March, 1999)
Authors: Dick Netzer and Lincoln Institute of Land Policy
Average review score:

Important analysis of land value taxation
This is a thought-provoking collection of essays about land value taxation, based on a conference held on the subject in 1998. Although implementation of a land value tax has been rejected historically, these scholarly chapters prove that economists continue to be intrigued by the idea. I consider the book an important addition to the literature on contemporary land taxation.

The Best Argument Against Quebec Separation
Every Canadian should read this book! Many of Dr. Schwartz's ideas from this book have come to fruition. The Supreme Court of Canada's ruling on unilateral separation is consistent with Dr. Schwartz's view of the Canadian constitution, and the government briefly took some of the tough stances (defining the referendum question, etc.) he advocates in this book. Lamentably, the government still has not taken the full clear stance of Dr. Schwartz. He advocates the federal government taking a firm line against Quebec separation and draws out the remarkable parallels between Canada's current situation and the situation of the pre civil war United States. In the course of this book Dr. Schwartz DESTROYS any credibility or moral stance Quebec separatists may ever claim to have.
As the title suggests, Canada does have much to learn from Lincoln. In the face of similar problems Lincoln knew what to do whereas our Canadian leaders have been gutless and clueless in dealing with Quebec.
I also highly recommend this book to Americans. It is a great way to become familiar with your closest neighbour's most serious problem. This book can teach Americans what the problem is and educate them about how to react if separation ever rears its ugly head in such a way that the United States can no longer ignore it.

Lay This Laurel
Published in Hardcover by Eakin Press (December, 2001)
Authors: Lincoln Kirstein and Richard Benson
Average review score:

Immortal Memorial
Generally hailed as America's finest Civil War memorial--maybe the most powerful memorial to any American war--the St. Gaudens masterpiece on Boston Common has inspired poetry, music, and probably a movie, "Glory." Lincoln Kirstein has written a stirring essay on the subjects: Colonel Shaw and his Massachusetts 54th Regiment (black), what they meant to their contemporaries, and their message for today. Although the photographs were taken in a bleak period for the Memorial (it badly needed restoration, which it received shortly after this book came out), Richard Benson's photographs are still powerful, able to transmit with finesse the messages of Shaw, his black comrades, St. Gaudens, and Lincoln Kirstein. It's a beautiful book, a labor of love.

Libra: The Cat Who Saved Silicon Valley
by Lincoln Taiz, Lee Taiz
Paperback: 326 pages
Publisher: Amsea Group Publishing, Inc.; (December 15, 2002)
ISBN: 0972304401

Libra The Cat Who Saved Silicon Valley is not your ordinary young adult book, nor is it your ordinary science fiction book, nor is it your ordinary learning book, but with a combination of them all, this book is a one of a kind read that will keep the reader interested long after the book is finished.

It is the story of a cat from the planet Gatos (gato is the Spanish word for cat) meets alien cats and tries to figure out who or what they are. Their adventure leads them to a "battle" with Silicon Valley Computers.
Ultimately, Libra goes back to Gatos but her adventure on Earth will never be forgotten, nor will the friendships she made.

The book is a twist of learning and play on words that children can understand and adults will enjoy. The sci-fi fan will love the language, information, and adventures in this story and the young reader will learn more about reading and language than they expected.

The book comes with a CD of music featuring Amanda Shelby. The 25 songs are fun to sing and listen to. And it is an added bonus that makes this book a real deal.

Before writing this review, I had my 5th grade son also read the book. He loved it. He enjoyed the play on words and the story line. He has since taken the book to school and has shared it with his friends. It is truly a book for all ages.

Lincoln

Author: Richard J. Carwardine
Average review score:

The Best Book on Lincoln to Appear in Many Years
This clearly written book is by a true expert in the politics and history of the antebellum and Civil War eras. Carwardine, Rhodes Professor of American History at Oxford University, presents a balanced, thoughtful, well-informed treatment of Lincoln as a political leader, expertly placing him in the full context of his times. Carwardine is especially wise on the subject of Lincoln's religious beliefs and their influence on his words and conduct as president. This book is an outstanding work of history and interpretation, based on the best primary and secondary sources.

Lincoln and Booth: More Light on the Conspiracy
Published in Paperback by Cumberland House (27 February, 2003)
Author: H. Donald Winkler
Average review score:

An invaluable contribution to Civil War Studies
Lincoln And Booth: More Light On The Conspiracy is a close and revealing study of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Journalist, historian, and political scientist H. Donald Winkler sheds new light on the possible conspiracies and motives that may have been a factor in Lincoln's assassination. Black and white photographs combined with deftly researched and presented evidence make for an insightful and highly commended study of a terrible political murder that was to serve as a grim and symbolic epilogue to the American Civil War. Lincoln And Booth is an invaluable contribution to Civil War Studies reference collections and Lincoln Studies reading lists.

Lincoln and Kansas: A Partnership for Freedom
Published in Paperback by Sunflower University Press (March, 2001)
Authors: Carol Dark Ayers and Carol Dark Ayres
Average review score:

Getting to Know Lincoln Better
Ayres begins her preface, "The mark of a great man, it has been said, is that the more you know about him the more you like him"(p.ix). In this book, Ayres' scholarship and passion for Lincoln and his Kansas connection come to life. Through her use of primary sources, stories, and the historical and political context of the times, Ayres shares insights into the lives and beliefs of the people and situations that shaped the history of Kansas and this country. This exciting read will whet the appetite for further research and questioning of the scholar/teacher within each of us. I encourage you to peruse her work. It is an enjoyable read as you learn more about the history of Kansas, the man Lincoln, and the events and characters of the time. It is also an excellent resource for teaching this period of history in Kansas. Within these pages, Ayres succeeds in shedding more light on some of the characters who influenced the decisions and outcomes of "bloody Kansas" and the events before, during, and after the Civil War. It also brings to life several of the many artifacts and Kansas treasures housed in the Saint Mary College Lincoln Collection and other valuable resources around the area. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of these historical characters in a more personal light. Great for summer or anytime reading!
